You must be incredibly proud of yourself. You are certainly no American slob. One can only assume that you have a masterful knowledge of all major cultures. The small mindedness of Americans never ceases to amaze me. I bet everyone in Singapore is well acquainted with Fawlty towers. I couldn't imagine anyone in Tokyo not knowing about the recent bollywood releases. It would just be uncivilized... The purpose of culture is to aid in the communication between similar backgrounds. The world is shrinking (or backgrounds expanding) and culture is becoming an increasingly global matter. This does not, however, negate the fact that countries, and therefore cultures, are still very much isolated from each other. To say that america dosnt care about any other country is only true insofar as any other country is guilty of the same thing. The real reason why this stereotype is perpetuated is much more complicated than it just being true and im not really knowledgeable enough to discuss it.

I'm American and I know British comedy quite well. I grew up on and love shows like Blackaddar, Monty Python (the show, not the movies), Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf, Coupling (the original), Keeping up Appearances, The Vicor of Dibbly (sorry if i spelled it wrong), Are You Being Served, and a many others. They're amazing shows and it's a shame that more Americans aren't familiar with them. It just perpetuates the stereotype that we don't care about any country other than our own.

the next person to mention A Bit of Fry and Laurie or anything having to do with Black Adders is going to get a trident up their ass. No Brits, we Americans as a population are NOT familiar with these shows.

Uh huh - if you're a Brit, you'll best know Hugh Laurie as Prince Ludwig in Blackadder II, Prince Regent on Blackadder III and the brilliant Lieutenant The Honourable George Colthurst St. Barleigh in Blackadder Goes Forth (to name but a few)! So much better than House! Friends got him in because he was more famous than Sarah Ferguson and Richard Branson!
